Is it brave to suffer in silence?

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is a success.

I do not think we should suffer in silence. I believe we can manage and accomplish a lot more if we work together. I think we will only feel even worse if we suffer alone. Perhaps others have experienced the same and might have the ability to cheer you up. On one hand, it is brave to handle pain on your own, but I think it takes even more courage to open up to others. If we share our thoughts and feeling, I think we can all live better together.

Task 1) Ways of being a good citizen

There are many different ways to be a significant citizen. All of the pictures are beautiful examples of how to really help the nation and how to be a kind human being. I especially find number 3 and number 5 significant. Bilderesultat for good citizens

In the third picture, there are people volunteering. There are ordinary humans working in a soup kitchen. They use their own time just to help others. They put the interest in helping others to have a better life, in front of themselves. This is an amazing quality, which is appreciated extremely high. This is bigger than a person, bigger than a nation, this is what we need to have a good society.

What I find rather funny, is the fact that there are often people whit issues and not the life of their dream who volunteers. The rich part of our community should be the one to support those in need. People with more than enough money, fancy jobs, a great family and the life they desire, should be the one to help the poorer parts. Unfortunately, they often focus on themselves and their lives. On the other hand, those people who bearly have enough to have a great life volunteer to make a difference. These humans often know how it is to be poor. They now have it is to be insecure and how big the fear for the future might be. Therefore it is amazing with those who focus on others, before themselves. These humans are a blessing to our planet, and really do make a difference. This is an amazing way to be a great citizen.

In the fifth picture is Leonardo DiCaprio and with an important message. Campaigning/raising awareness involves creating a specific messaging campaign about a particular issue. And in 1998, Leonardo DiCaprio created the Foundation to support organizations and initiatives dedicated to securing a sustainable future for our planet. He is continually engaged and active on the most pressing issues we face, that is climate change. Therefore he accesses to clean water, protecting biodiversity, disaster relief and oceans conservation. What he is doing is developing community support for climate change in the informal justice sector. It also informs and educates people about the issue. Leonardo has produced a lot of media projects to communicate the urgency of the issues to the public through his foundation, including two short web films Water Planet and Global Warning and Before the flood. These films have been viewed by people around the world.

Leonardo is on the board of several organizations dedicated to these issues. He has worked strategically to shift public awareness on climate issues and hopes to reach the public more directly with his website, which he dedicated half to environmental news and content. Leonardo and his Foundation have produced a number of media projects that communicate the urgency of climate change to the public.

Task 2) Stand up for what you believe is right

The world is continuously changing. Now it is more important than ever, that we stand up for what we believe is right. In the assignment, there are three magnificent examples of this behavior.

The first one was about Edward Snowden and the United States of America. Edward Snowden was hired by a National Security Agency (NSA) contractor in 2013. After leaving his job at NSA, he revealed thousands of classified NSA documents to journalists. He came to international attention after stories based on the material appeared in The Guardian and The Washington Post, which is a British and Amercian newspaper. June 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed charges against Snowden of two counts of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property, and the Department of State revoked his passport. Two days later, he flew into Moscow, but Russian authorities noted that his U.S. passport had been canceled, and he was restricted to the airport terminal for over one month. Russia ultimately granted hum right of asylum for one year. Repeated extensions have permitted him to stay at least until 2020.

In 2016 Edward Snowden became the president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, an organization that aims to protect journalists from hacking and government surveillance. As of 2017, he was living in an undisclosed location in Moscow. Snowden has been called a hero, a whistleblower, a dissident, a tration, and a patriot.

Now, Snowden wants to return to The United States of America. He has no regrets five years on form leaking the biggest cache of top-secret documents in history. The U.S. wants him, and he is an exile in Russia. Snowden is one of the most famous fugitives in the world. The US and UK governments, on the basis of his revelations, have faced court challenges to surveillance laws. New legislation has been passed in both countries. The internet companies, responding to a public backlash over privacy, have made encryption commonplace.

In Marikana, in South Africa, the miners did not work in good enough circumstances, and their wages were pretty low. Therefore they commanded an increase. Luckily, South Africa is a democratic country. Therefore the miners made a demonstration, and on the 23rd of January 2014, almost 70 000 platinum mine workers went on a strike.

The strike took place in Rustenburg and caused a lot of problems. In the area, they lost 40% of the platinum production. The strike lasted for 5 months and ended after an offer on 23th of June 2014. The offer was to increase wages by about 55 English pounds per month. People celebrated when the deal was made, and the wages increased. On the 25th of June, the miners were back on work.

Unfortunately, the strike was not easy on the citizens. Live without wages for months, Bilderesultat for strike in marikana 2014was not at all easy. In addition, many miners were injured by the police, during the strike. Some even got killed.

Is that right? People got injured and killed, in a democratic country, just because they said what they believed in. The value of speaking for a better future is huge. We cannot expect any new development if do not deal with what we stand for and what we believe in. Today almost nothing has changed. There are still people striking, and people working with awful circumstances. But I still hope people have the courage to stand up for what they believe in. That is essential, and will probably be a lot better in the future.

Dear Mr.Dicaprio

Dear Mr.Dicaprio.

In my English class today, we saw an interesting and important movie, Before the Flood. At the end of the movie, you and Barack Obama seemed very optimistic towards the Paris agreement. Unfortunately, that arrangement was made a while ago, and a lot has changed. Especially the USA has changed. Now I am pretty worried, what is actually going on? And what will happen in the future?

What surprised me the most in the movie, was the melting of the glaciers. That really made me understand how fast, and how much our climate is changing. The fact that this process leads to climate refugees, is really scary. And proofs that what is going on around us is very dreadful.

However, this film really inspired me to make a change. I understood that everyone needs to do what we can, to help to save our environment. The sad thing is, my actions do not count alone, especially when powerful countries like the USA, act like it does. Helpfully, if everyone makes some offers, and do our best, I know we can accomplish a lot. So my question to you is; what can we do to help to save our planet?

From a 16 years old girl from Norway.

Tasks about the movie “Spare Parts”

This powerful movie is very interesting and inspiring. And the fact, that it is based on a true story made the movie even better. The four boys were dreamers, which meant they were undocumented and lived with daily fear. The characters in the movie were mostly true. For instance, Oscar dreamed of joining the army, but could not, because he was undocumented.

Reality vs. the Movie

How they came up with the idea of joining the competition was not entirely true. It was the teacher’s idea, and he was not an engineer. Plus the fact that there were two teachers. But one thing that was true, that I find very cool, is that the boys got the special prize in real life as well. And Lorenzo really did ask to go to Hooters if they won the competition.

Are Robots the Future?

The different schools had uncomparable amounts of money. MIT had around eighteen thousand dollars, while Carl Hayden had under eight hundred dollars. In addition, MIT was a university who was one of the best at IT. But despite the money and circumstances, Carl Hayden won. That is very inspiring and proves that money is not at all everything. For Carl Hayden had an amazing and strong advantage, they really worked as a team and used the different qualities the members had.

Robots, as the children made in the movie, can be useful in many different ways. In China, there are made amazing robots, which might save human lives. They are now in use at the hospitals. They will never replace the doctors, but the electronics might have the ability to see, whit dame.jpgat the human eye cannot see. According to the site, Science, seven humans they thought would never wake up, woke up and the robots were the reason. Robots will most likely be a big part of the future. Therefore it is important with young people, like those in the movie, who can study and learn about robots, computers, and electricity. It is important with girls who fancy these topics as well.

Working Together as a Team

Everyone has different qualities, and have something important that can help to improve the world. Alone we have to do much more, and we can feel we have the weight of the world on our shoulders. Together, on the other hand, we can use our own skills, and work on what we do best.

Firstly, in school nowadays, we are very focused on memorizing and being able to learn what we are told. But as we grow up, and get a job, that is just one of the qualities that is essential. Almost every single job depends on cooperation. Adults work with peers and in groups. Often it is not appreciated being selfish and just being able to memorize. Social skills, empathy, and teamwork are essential values for almost every single job. And these values are important in our everyday life as well.

My reading of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

The theme paragraph

“Junior, sweetheart,” Mom said. “I’m sorry, but we don’t have any money for Oscar.”

“I’ll pay you back,” I said. “I promise.”

“Honey, it’ll cost hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.”

“I’ll pay back the doctor. I’ll get a job.”

Mom smiled all sad and hugged me hard.

The theme explained

There are many different themes in the book, but in my opinion, growing up is the most important one. Especially how to grow up in poor families and with a troubled childhood, like in a reservation, therefore is this paragraph significant.

Another important theme in the book is friendship and independence. Rowdy did not like the fact that his best friend changed school. But the main character did it anyway. In my opinion that was a brave and right choice. Everyone cannot agree on everything, and it is important to live your own life. I believe Rowdy understood that at the end of the book because they became friends again.

One last theme I find very important is to make the best of every situation. Junior experienced a lot in his life and had a harsh childhood. First of all, he was born with a disease. And he did not have the best place, environment or family. But he did not let that stop him, he made friends, stood up for himself and was optimistic. An example is that he dared to change school.

The setting paragraph

I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation.

Explanation of the setting

The setting of the book is where the action takes place. And in the paragraph above, the main character, Junior, tells about his home. He was, in fact, living in the United States, but in an Indian reservation. An Indian reservation is a place for Native American tribes. The people in this society were all black and knew each other. This place might sound idyllic, but that is not the truth, as Junior explained in the paragraph above. They were poor and sad, had not many opportunities, know hunger well too good, and the families had often a sad history.

The plot paragraph

Of course, I was suspended from school after I smashed Mr.P in the face, even though it was a complete accident.

The plot explanation

This paragraph is significant for the story, for after he got suspended he changed school. He took responsibility for his education and changed to Rearden school. This event made everyone he knew from the Rez feel he betrayed them. He had a hard time making new friends in the new school, but it became better gradually. For example, Junior made a friend after he punched him because he first made a racist joke on Junior. He also got a place on a sports team, which made him happy and a part of a group.

Later in the book, his life became more tragic, because many of the important people in his life died. For instance his sister and a good friend of his father. In addition, it was hard for him in the new school, and he lost contact with his best friend. But in the end, it all became better after he connected with his friend again. And all the way through the story he had the courage and did what he believed was right.

Character development paragraph

“No, I’m serious. I always knew you were going to leave. I always knew you were going to leave us behind and travel the world. I had this dream about you a few months ago. You were standing on the Great Wall of China. You looked happy. And I was happy for you”.

Rowdy didn’t cry, but I did.

“You’re an old-time nomad,” Rowdy said. “You’re going to keep moving all over the world in search of food and water and grazing land. That’s pretty cool.”

“Thank you,” I said.

Character development explanation

The main character of the book is Junior. In the beginning, he was insecure and did as everyone else around him. But through the book he learned to stand up for himself, and despite his difficulties, he managed everything great it the end. His courage was clearly showed when he changed school, and how he stayed positive, even with a lot of grief.

In this paragraph, he and Rowdy are good friends again. That proves that he also is a part of his old community, and lived partly at the end of the book the way he did at the beginning of the book. But he did change a lot during the book, which is totally natural. I mean, he experienced a lot.

My impression of the book

I liked reading the book. It was interesting, and it was pretty easy to read. There were cartoons, which made the book easier to understand. The book was written in a funny way, and it was in general entertaining. The story variated and was better than I thought in the beginning. For me, the book was also highly exciting, for the reason that a lot of the plot was inspired by the author’s life. I absolutely recommend the book, especially for teenagers.

Questions for the reporter

An important theme is growing up. Has your own childhood affected the book?

Would you read another book by the author?

How does the main character change through the book?

There are many topics, what is your favorite and the most important one?

To the expert, do you have any questions to the authors?

Is it a turning point in the book?

If a class should read the book, why would exactly your book be the one to read?

Can you compare the two books?

How to Study Like a Pro

–Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching

Every year students use hundreds of hours working with homework and school assignments. This is highly important, and essential for a good education. Unfortunate this takes a lot of time, and it is important to have a social life as a student as well.

Therefore it is important to study smart! Everybody can achieve good grades, but the smartest ones know how to use as little time as possible. Many scientists have focused on understanding what the smartest tips and techniques are. For example, the Pomodoro Technique is recommended by scientists, and very hot nowadays.

The Pomodoro Technique is first of all about working concentrated in short periods, and with none distractions. For that reason, it is important to turn off notifications, and only focus on the topic for 25 minutes. After that, it is important with a break, because then your brain will continue to process the topic.

         The best tips:

  • have none distractions
  • work in intervals
  • make a list of what you desire to achieve
  • take breaks and relax
  • reward yourself

Climate change

Climate change is nowadays a hot topic, both to talk about and in the news. That is not odd at all, because hurricanes and cyclones keep getting bigger and deadlier. The areas around Mexico and the Golf are especially exposed. Just like the huge Hurricane in Puerto Rico last year, and the hurricane in Florence this year.

This is terrifying, and should absolutely be taken seriously. But the frightening truth is the way the U.S government manipulates the death tolls. In fact, they make them seem less dangerous and even try to hide the numbers. They would for example rather said “some lives got lost”, instead of “30 individuals died”.

The Emergency Service is in fact not able to help everyone who needs it. They are simply not fit to handle the extreme weather. All in all, during the tragic hurricane in Puerto Rico, 2975 humans died. But the government first claimed that only 64 lost their lives.

Donal Trump, the president of the United States, even meant the Emergency Service did a “fantastic job” with the Hurricane, despite the fact that 3000 passed away. The president also said they were better than they were handling a hurricane in 2005, where only 1200 died.

donald trump

Unfortunately, the climate changes are very real, and will probably affect our lives a lot in the future. And it is no doubt that the U.S government tries to cover up the mistakes, and the limits of the Emergency Service. The biggest threat with this is the fact that they are probably not prepared to save the people if something dramatic happens.

A good conversation and how to win an argument

To win an argument, it is important to convince others, but it is just as important to listen.

To change someone’s mind it is important to understand their state of mind, and then use arguments that they understand. To win the argument, it is important to use beliefs, values, and ideas in your own favor.

In the English lesson today, we had an argument in pairs, but neither in my group won. I believe this is because we were focused on our own state of mind, instead of really understanding the other side of the story.

Later the same class, we saw a film about being a good listener. Being a good listener is about really caring about the conversation, instead of pretending to, by nodding and smiling. Some other helpful tips were to focus on the other partner, let other thoughts go, and to ask questions.

To win an argument it is important to prove your argument and have good points. But it’s also important to use the listening tips in the paragraph over.

The first chapters of my book

So far I like the book, it was exciting from the beginning. I have already got to know the main character, and his inner circle as well. The main character was born with some faults. This made him different, and therefore he got bullied. His family was poor, so he did not have the money or many opportunities for his future.

For fun, he loved to draw comics and spend time with his best friend, Rowdy. They were together for several hours every single day. The main character had big dreams and wanted to become rich and famous. Poor people mostly do not achieve their goals. But the 14 years old boy believed he could become big, rich and famous because of his comics.

The book is written in first person, which made the book different and interesting. The sentences are varied, and it is easy to read. So far it is written from a young boy´s perspective.
